Thank you 2008 Space Coast Art Festival Volunteers

Thank You Space Coast Art Festival Volunteers!

Once again, the Galleries at the Space Coast Art Festival were handled with the greatest care. Thanks go to the following CBWC members:

Polly Atkinson, Jean Carey, Claudia Davis, Bobbie Stevens, Carole Glynn, I.B. Johansson, Pamela Kendrick, Beth Gott, Barbara Holden, Ava Henry, Barbara Freeman, and Rose Marie Wiley, plus prospective new member June McClure and husbands Tom Atkinson and Brian Grigsby.

A total of 175 pieces of art, selected for final judging, were processed by you and returned to its' rightful owner after the final judging was completed. The Art Festival would never have been the success that it was without your volunteerism.

Marilyn Grigsby,
SCAF Gallery Chairman

Dr. Elbert (Sonny) Witt, Speaker, Jan. 8

PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT
HISTORICAL PRESERVATION

The Public Affairs Department is presenting the program for the January meeting and the speaker will be Dr. Elbert (Sonny) Witt. Dr. Witt is the Director of Operations at Cape Canaveral Air Force Base.

Dr. Witt will tell us about the Space Coast’s oldest historic landmark - the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. He has many tales to tell about Corporal Henry Wilson and his days as an early lighthouse keeper. Dr. Witt is also arranging a private bus tour of the Air Force Base including the lighthouse. Sign-up sheets will be available.

I would like to thank you for all your help rising money for Heifer International.
You bought the items I put on the Market Place, gave up all your loose change, played “Heads or Tails” and we raised $910.00!

You heard Teresa Apgar tell us about Beatrice’s goat - how it enabled her to go to school in her village and how she is pursuing a Masters Degree in the United States. I told you about the farmer in Thailand who said if he died, his family would mourn him, but if his water buffalo died, his family would starve.
Ladies, $910.00 will buy 2 goats, 1 water buffalo, 2 sheep, 1 pig and a flock of chickens!

Just think of the difference these animals will make in the lives of families and villages all over the world!

Next month we will have an opportunity to make a big difference in the lives of some of the women in our communities. The Public Affairs Department is planning a Clothing Drive. The clothing donated will be divided between Dress for Success and the Brevard Sharing Center.

The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

Please look through your closets and bring items that are clean and in good condition.

Jean Carey, 1st VP

"Member of the Month" Pauline Contakas

Pauline Contakas has been a member of CBWC for almost forty years. She and her husband, Louis, moved here in 1966 from New Rochelle, New York.

Pauline’s husband and her brother–in–law opened a foreign auto parts business which was a new idea for the area and was very successful. She and her husband had one son, George.

Pauline says that at that time a trip to Cocoa by bus took about an hour. But, since there was no Mall on Merritt Island, Cocoa was a good place to shop.

At the time that she joined, a large percentage of members were wives of retired officers and workers at the Space Center. Pauline is a great source for Club and area history!

President's Report January 2009

2009 - May it be a good and healthy year for us all!

Thank you to all who have contributed to our state president’s project, “Heifer International.” We have raised over nine hundred dollars to date.

We are going to be welcoming several new members to our club. Six will be installed in January with more joining us in February. Thanks to Terry and all who are working so hard on membership. This is vital to keep us going both at the local and state levels.

Please start saving toiletries for our public affairs department. Anne Herrington is collecting them for domestic abuse victims.

One of our biggest events of the year is coming on January 18th. Please mark your calendars as we will need several of you to help with registration and traffic control at our “Antique Appraisal Fair." Also, many of you probably have items to be appraised. Flyers will be available on January 8th but please tell everyone you can to come to the fair!

We will be having a very special speaker in January. Please see Jean Carey’s column for details. I have met the gentleman and he is quite an entertainer. It will be a great opportunity to bring guests.

Bravo to Irene Harrington and her Arts and Crafts committee. Everyone worked so hard to get a new project for us and it was a lot of fun to attend the Vendor Fair.

We are entering a new year filled with new opportunities and challenges. The need for our services will be greater than ever. Fortunately we are going to have new members and as a larger group we can hopefully contribute more to our community.

Happy New Year to you all!

A thought to remember:
“Money can’t buy health, happiness or what it did last year.”

Fellowship and Community,
Pam Kendrick
