Congratulations to our ladies in the “Art Department!
Due to all of our work in the Space Coast Art Festival, Very Special Arts at the Zoo, the Art and Craft Vendor Fair, and other projects, we brought home an "Award" from State Convention for our Art efforts.
Special thanks go to Irene Harrington for her Vendor Fair concept and Jean Carey for writing the report.
Congratulations also go to Terry Ducharme for her second place win and Julia George for honorable mention in the convention art / craft contest.
There were 674 women registered at state convention. This included both general and junior members. State president, Linda Dennis, was somewhat overwhelmed that her two year goal was achieved in one year! Each of the fourteen districts in the state raised enough money ($5,000) to contribute at least one ark to Heifer International. We also learned that Heifer is now working to help in the USA as well as overseas.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the domestic violence project. It was hugely successful. We filled an entire wall, floor to ceiling, with our state-wide contributions.
The GWFC Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs was named the recipient of the 2008 R. David and I. Lorraine Thomas Child Advocate of the Year Award on March 28, 2009 at the Portraits of possibilities reception of the Children’s Home Society.
This award was established in 1982 by Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy’s International. GFWC was selected for it’s exceptional contribution to the well being of children, especially those who are disadvantaged, troubled and / or abused and for it’s association with interests that exemplify the highest human values. We in CBWC can be very proud of the small part that we played in winning this award.
I would really like to encourage more of our members to participate in district events as well as the state convention. It is an opportunity to hear about all that we are doing and a reminder that we are here as a service organization to help the needy in our communities. We have a spring workshop coming on Friday, May 29 in Grand Haven.
I would like to share some interesting information I learned at convention. In the 14 Florida districts we have 180 clubs. Only 63 of these clubs publish newsletters and only 54 of them have yearbooks. We can be proud of our accomplishments even though we are a small club. Thank you to everyone who contributes to these efforts.
