Cocoa Beach Woman's Club Presents

The Cocoa Beach Woman's Club is pleased to host the "First Annual Festival of Trees and More" on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at the Cocoa Beach Country Club. They are inviting any business, organization, or individual to participate. The theme will be "The Joy of the Holidays". There will be three categories: Trees (4-foot maximum height); Wreaths; and, Centerpieces.
All items will be displayed at the Cocoa Beach Country Club on Saturday, December 3rd with a live auction beginning at 4:00pm.
There will be cookies, hot chocolate and maybe a visit from Santa.
This is a great way to advertise your business or organization, while supporting your community, since all the funds raised will be used to help the Cocoa Beach Woman's Club in their various charitable activities.
There is no fee to participate. All you need to do is agree (by November 28th, 2011) to provide a decorated tree, wreath, or centerpiece, (delivered on December 3rd) and the Cocoa Beach Woman's Club will take care of the rest.

Guest Speaker Officer Becky Ireland, Cocoa Beach Police Department

Our guest speaker at our October 6th meeting is Becky Ireland from the Cocoa Beach Police Department. She has been with the Police Department since 2004 and currently serves as a shift patrol sergeant. She has served the Police Department in several capacities: Detective, Crime Prevention, Community Watch/Electronic Neighborhood Watch/ and National Night Out.

Becky is a graduate of the Seminole Community College Police Academy and has been serving in the United States Air Force Reserves since 2001. She deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom in 2009.

"Hello" Ladies...

Fall is officially here and although we don't have the beautiful "changing of the leaves" we do have the potential for cooler temperatures.

Did you know that October is National Book Month, Crime Prevention Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and National Arts and Humanities Month?

During this month we can also celebrate World Teacher's Day (10/5), World Food Day (10/10), National Mammography Day (10/21), and Fire Prevention Week (10/9-15).

Did you notice that five of our six CSP departments are represented in these events--wow!

If you feel the need to get involved, make sure to check it out! It is proven that Volunteerism is great for both yourself and for those around you.

I'm hoping all our CSP committees will meet sometime this month and work on their related projects.

I look forward to seeing you at the general meeting, and working with you throughout this month.

W.O.R.K.I.N.G. MEETING (Women Organizing Rallying and Kicking Into the Next Gear)

The Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club would like to invite any and all District 6 Club women and Junior Club women to share in a working session on Saturday, July 9th, starting at 10:00. The meeting will be held at the Cocoa Beach Country Club.

This will NOT be in the style of a District meeting, but rather a more informal gathering. Participates will be encouraged to share ideas. There will also be an opportunity for those clubs that are geographically close to each other to work together at developing joint projects for their area.

A casual lunch will be served. We will meet as long as you want, or until 2:00, whichever happens first. Cost is $10.00, plus one non-perishable food item per participant. The food will be delivered by the CBWC to a local food distribution center in the name of the District 6 Woman’s Clubs.

$5,000.00 in scholarships and awards to students

The Cocoa Beach Woman's Club held their annual Student Awards Ceremony on June 2. Recipients received over $5,000.00 in scholarships and awards to students from the Cocoa Beach area. Three $1,000.00 scholarships were presented to Saylor Kelly, Candace Kuzma, and Lili Megan Moots. These students were chosen based on their leadership skills, outstanding community service record and their academic achievement

An additional award was presented with a grant to Pallavi Shankar. Pallavi will attend the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Program, founded in 1958. HOBY's mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service learning and motivation-building experiences.

Cocoa Beach Woman's Club carries out many fund raising projects throughout the year. Every year we provide scholarships to deserving students from Cocoa Beach area high schools. Likewise we present monetary awards to the CB/Sr. High School band, chorus, and orchestra. Elementary students were awarded $50.00 savings bonds for their outstanding academic and leadership efforts. There were fourteen recipients of these savings bonds.

The Cocoa Beach Woman's Club was established in 1965 and focuses on community service. Our membership is open to women in Cocoa Beach and the surrounding area. Our meetings are held on the first Thursday monthly, will resume in September. We extend an invitation to join us in our endeavor to serve our community. Michael G. Carroll is the Deputy Inspector General at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). A special thanks goes to all those who volunteered to help “man” the Galleries during the 47^th Space Coast Art Festival on Thanksgiving weekend. We collected 215 pieces of fine art for the final judging and managed to return all, in perfect condition, to the individual artists.

You volunteered a total of 72 hours that weekend and as chairman of the Gallery Committee I can’t thank you enough for giving up your time during a very busy weekend.

COCOA BEACH - This year, members of the Cocoa Beach Woman's club will celebrate 45 years of supporting educational scholarships and promoting the advancement of women in Cocoa Beach and the surrounding areas.

Founded in 1965 by Louise Broiser, the nonprofit organization, which has close to 50 members, meets the first Thursday of every month at the Cocoa Beach Country Club.

"I had never lived in a town that didn't have one," said Ms. Broiser, who moved to Cocoa Beach from Virginia in 1965. "The women north of (state road) 520 didn't know the women south of (state road) 520 and I thought it was terrible."

So, Ms. Broiser got to work organizing the club, and even before they'd been awarded their charter they embarked on their first project.

Endeavoring to help victims of Hurricane Betsy, Ms. Broiser and the 33 original members collected 90 tons of supplies that were sent as relief to Louisiana.

On Oct. 7, 1965 the club received its official charter and in the following years completed many projects to improve the community, including incorporating an art festival, starting a senior citizen's club (which is now the Freedom 7 Senior Center) and raising money for the construction of a community center.

On the club's 25th anniversary they donated land and money to build the community center, which is now part of the Cocoa Beach Country Club. Since then, the club has donated $500,000 to fund the community center and make improvements such as adding a dance floor and drapes for the stage.

They raised money for this through the "Out of the World" cookbook sales, said Marilyn Grigsby, treasurer and past president.

"Members wrote to everyone they knew, including astronauts and politicians," said Ms. Grigsby.

One cookbook includes a recipe submitted by former first lady Nancy Reagan.

Supporting education has also been a key component to the club's activities, said Ms. Grigsby.

The club provides scholarships for high school seniors at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School, for women returning to the workforce, runs a remedial reading tutoring program in elementary schools and supports the performing arts programs at the schools.

The club's fundraisers throughout the year also support student awards, project graduation, the Space Coast Art Festival, the Salvation Army, Special Olympics and Hugh O'Brien Youth Scholarship Program.

Outstanding students at the four Cocoa Beach area elementary schools receive savings bonds from the club when they graduate to middle school.

The members raise their funds through events throughout the year including a fashion show in January, arts and crafts fairs in the winter and fall and the Pelican Home Tour in March.

In the past, the club hosted the Space Coast King and Queen contest, awarding the title to whoever could raise the most funds in honor of the club.

The challenge ceased two years ago, but Ms. Grigsby said they are bringing it back next year.

The last crowned king was Commissioner Kevin Pruett in 2007 and the last crowned queen was Teresa Hardcastle in 2005.

Ms. Broiser said 45 years later she is pleased the club is still helping both young and older people, which is what she enjoys doing.

"Being a part of the club is really a joy. I love meeting all of the ladies and seeing what they can do," she said.

The club members will celebrate the 45th anniversary with a luncheon at the Cocoa Beach Country Club Sept. 9, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a meet and greet, followed by a business meeting and ribbon cutting. Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Spring Convention was another great weekend of learning, re-energizing, and networking. There was almost no "down time" as each day was spent going from workshops, meetings and programs. Some of the best learning was done during the meals with other district clubs! It was very rewarding to see how our club's fund-raising efforts have become part of the "bigger picture" in supporting a large variety of charitable organizations throughout Florida. I've come back with earlier ideas more solidified, and new ideas ready for development. There were 111 clubs that participated in the Arts and Crafts competition with 368 individual craft entries. Talk about amazing--they were great to look at. I am looking forward to the next convention and taking many of our club members too, so start planning now for Fall Board Sept 17 - 19, 2010

Arts Department
The Artful Bra Project at State Convention was a great success. There were 208 creative examples and it was very hard for the judges to choose the top 100. Our club ladies created a total of 13 bras, and I am proud to announce that seven of them made it to the top 100! Those were: Angel Blessings, Unicorns, and Las Vegas by Terry Ducharme, Queen of the Mardi Gras by Anna Perez, Roses of Hope by Ava Henry, Mardi Party Cat by Pat Dugan, and Lady has the Blues by Julia George. The voting during convention weekend raised $232, which will go to mammograms for women in need. Our club raised $21 at our April meeting..that's almost 10% of the total raised--great job ladies! There were indications that this project will continue into the next administration, so start finding those 36C padded bras, find those items for decorating, and start thinking about creative ways to promote breast cancer awareness. Some pictures from this year's entries can be found on our blog.

Craft Project Reminders:
Please clean and save your tuna fish cans, your wine bottle corks, old silk florals, and any small Christmas ornaments that you no longer want.
You can give them to Julia at the next 2 meetings. We are going to turn these items into some lovely crafts that we will sell at our Nov craft sale.
The Arts and Crafts Department will not be meeting until June. We hope all of you participate in the fun and socializing when we restart our efforts of creating items for our November sale.

President's May Letter from Pam Kendrick

The past two years have gone by very quickly. I truly appreciate all the help and advice that I have received. As I have not yet been a club member four years, my need for advice has been great.
There were several volunteers working for VSA at the Zoo last week. It is a time which always makes me feel humble and blessed. Also, it is impressive to see the dedicated teachers working with such skill and patience.
Julia and I have just returned from convention and did they ever keep us busy! The Artful Bra display was a huge hit and will be continued next year. The creativity and humor shown in making over 400 bras was really something. Over half of our entries will be going on the tour.
This was the convention at which checks were given to the charities that we support statewide. It is always a time to be very proud of what we do. For a two year total, we gave $308,298 to the Heifer Project. Our total for all donations for two years was $431,598. Our total for the past 6 years combined was almost $1,000,000! Awesome!
I would again like to encourage more participation from CBWC at the state convention. It has been my pleasure and privilege to meet some very dynamic ladies there in the past few years. I have agreed to take a small job at the district level for next year. Instead of writing our annual reports I will be reading what others in our district have done.
Thanks to all the hard work done by Jean Carey. We won First Place in the state for our outstanding programs this year. Jean really knows what makes a great program!
It seems strange to be writing my final opening letter. I’m looking forward to a great installation party. Chef Damion will again be providing us with a lovely lunch. The past DD6 director and state Helping Hands Chair, Blanche Voetberg-Newman will do our installation. I hope you will all attend. “A memory lasts forever, never does it die. Happy Valentines Day!

What a great January we are having! You ladies make me so proud to be a small part of the Cocoa Beach Woman's Club. About 1/3 of our members submitted detailed reports on hours to me and I want to say thank you to each of you. Special thanks go to Jean Carey, Claudia Davis and Julia George for major help with writing the state reports. Without these members, the work would not be so well done. We are truly submitting reports that are a joint effort and this is exactly as it should be.

Also, I could not be more proud of how the fashion show is "shaping up". We need to find seating for 158 ladies -- what a delightful chore! And what a show we are going to have! There has been so much behind the scenes planning going on - starting with Jean Carey getting our fashions and myself getting our caterer last spring.

Both Julia George and Sheryle Schaefer, (our Chair) have done tremendous amounts of work in the past few weeks. We have so upgraded our food, fashions, gifts, etc. that we have also purchased new plates and cutlery for our event. Thank you all for your great job in selling tickets. I am so looking forward to this party.

I have received the official call for our district arts / crafts festival. Please remember that our local contest will be at our Feb 4 meeting and only winners from this showing will then go on to district. We did an outstanding job last year and hope to continue our winning streak this year.

I sincerely want to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has been so generous with their time -- not just this month but all this past year. It has made all the difference!

A reminder that we need to sell those Ocean Landings tickets for scholarship money. The drawing will be at our Gala on Feb. 20th and the free week is in April. Also availlable for sale are our beautiful book covers and the CBWC pens that we have been giving to our guests.
A final special thank you to Marilyn Grigsby for her excellent Treasurer's report without which I could not have done the state's statistics.
It is again necessary for me to report that several of our members are having health difficulties. Our thoughts to Jean Carey, Barbara Holden, Anne Herrington, Pauline Contakos, Lucy Tolson, and Betty Rokes. My sincere apologies if I have omitted any ladies.

For those of you who are bringing a craft or art project to our February meeting, please meet briefly with Julia before our January Meeting begins (about 9:45). I'd like to get everyone pre-registered and help determine in which category your item best fits. Remember, if your item wins a blue ribbon at our February meeting it will move on to the District competition. If you know someone who is not a club member and would make a knowledgeable judge for our creations, please let me know by the January meeting. Thanks!

We're working on the reports that go to the State Federation and need your data brought to our January meeting. Our club has done so very much with a relatively small membership and we'd like you to get some recognition for your efforts. Remember to look over the year from January to December 2009 and note the time put in for committee meetings, prep of goodies for hostessing, as well as the dollars you spent on those goodies, for tickets to our various functions, donations made of canned goods, clothes, etc. Each of us doing just a little adds up to so much for others. For example, did you know that we donated over $800 worth of clothes at our December meeting alone? And we were able to fill 11 gift bags of toiletries for needy women. And we again reached our goal of raising $500 for the Heifer International project. Your giving adds up! We continue to work feverously on the Artful Bra Project. We will use whatever we have finished as unique centerpieces at the Fashion Show. We will meet at the Coral Seas condo to share ideas and materials on January 5th, 12th, and 19th at 1:30. If you don't want to make a bra then come and help us paint the holders. If you are completing one (or two, or three) padded 36C bras on your own, please let Julia know so we can plan accordingly. I'm sure these will be very eye-opening and will generate lots of conversation at our Fashion Show. Events coming soon: January: Fashion Show February: Spring GALA & Drawing for Ocean Landings March: Pelican Home Tour Our “Sarasota Bling Fashion Show” is just around the corner (January 23, at 11:30) and it promises to be a really nice event. Please remember that tickets WILL NOT be available at the door. In order to have an accurate count for the caterer, all tickets must be paid for in advance and the guest list confirmed by January 18th. Once again the Galleries @ the Space Coast Art Festival were handled with the greatest care. A special "thank you" goes to the following CBWC members who helped:

Barbara Holden

Barb was born in Washington, D.C. but lived in St. Louis (Clayton) MO most of her life. She graduated from Stephens College with a degree in Theater Arts & Voice. She spent a semester in Europe studying music theory, voice and visiting opera houses throughout Europe. She met Parker, her husband of 45 years, a Missouri U. grad, while in college and spent the next twenty years as an Army officer’s wife, traveling the globe. She especially enjoyed her four years living in Giessen, Germany. The worst was having her first daughter, Kristin while Parker was on his first tour in Viet Nam. Their second daughter, Amanda was born at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma in the Army hospital. Ten years later, they were stationed in Maryville MO where Barb went back to school and received a degree in Psychology and Sociology. After retiring from the Army they returned to St. Louis where Barb ran a 24 hour Suicide/Crisis Intervention Hot Line and later managed a church office. While visiting Army friends, they bought a home in Merritt Island in 1999. Barb has 4 granddaughters’ one of which lives with her.

In 2003, Parker & Barb were enjoying a Pelican House Tour. Before she had even joined the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club, Allison McKay had her assigned as Editor of the CBWC newsletter, which she did for three years. Barb has served on the CBWC Executive Board for 5 years. Through the years Barb has co-chaired the Space Coast King/Queen Balls and chaired numerous Fashion Shows and Pelican Home Tours. Barb served as CBWC President from 2006-2008 and as Advisor the past two years. Barb has enjoyed her CBWC experiences and friendships she has made. We appreciate all that Barb has given to the CBWC over the years.

Happy New Year!

As many of our members have had health issues in the past year, let us wish for a healthy 2010.

Our Christmas party was a lot of fun. Thanks for all the help from so many of you. Our efforts to raise money for Heifer International were successful too.

A big “Thank You” to Terry Ducharme for the loan of her new car in the Cocoa Beach Christmas Parade. We could have wished for sunshine that day, however.

Many of you have expressed favorable comments on our food from the Christmas party. We will have the same caterer for our Fashion Show. Damian has put together an outstanding menu for us and we will be remembered for our food as well as fashion.

Much effort has already been put into making the show a really special event. The vendor who will be bringing the clothing has never done a fashion show in our area before. This is a rare opportunity to see some really unusual clothing and accessories.
We will also be drawing gemstones again. I have been told there are emeralds, rubies, sapphires (no diamonds) and some really nice choices just waiting to be drawn.

There will also be two very special baskets to be raffled at our fashion show. One theme is “gourmet” and the other is “spa”. We will also have door prizes. This is truly a “not to be missed” day!

Decorations will be provided by Julia and her crafty ladies. We really need to make an all out effort to sell tickets to this unusual show. This could help us make a name for our Club as providers of an outstanding event.

With my time as CBWC President nearing an end, I hope for success in our final fundraisers. We are already receiving applications for scholarships. It will be hard to select just a few.

Volunteer Hours Tracking Cocoa Beach Woman's Club

It's that time of year again--the annual State reports about our service activities. Did you know that each member needs to report their volunteer activities from January 1, 2009 thru December 31, 2009?

Look through your '08-'09 yearbook to remind you of what you've done to help during 2009. Examples: if you baked/brought refreshments for one of our monthly meetings, count the hours you spent baking and the estimated money value of what you brought; count the number of hours you attended planning meetings around events or department specific meetings, including related phone calls; count the financial contributions you made to any project/activity including personal checks, admission tickets, raffle tickets, etc.; count the estimated value of any items you donated.

When you write these items up, make sure to put the date, related event or department, hours contributed, and money contributed. Don't forget to put your name on the page and give this info to Pam Kendrick by the January 7th meeting in order for it to be included in our Club reports. You'll be surprised at how quickly our volunteer hours add up!

Upcoming Events - Cocoa Beach Woman's Club

I'm really looking forward to seeing those projects you will enter in our Arts and Crafts Competition. Eligible work must be completed between January 1 and December 31, 2009. Our Club competition will be February 4, 2010 at our regular meeting. There are a multitude of categories in both the crafts and the arts division. Contact Julia for more detailed guidelines. ALSO, I would like any feedback you have about someone you know, who is NOT a club member, who would be qualified to assist with judging. Thanks and happy crafting!

The Artful Bra Project. The creating has begun and some of the ladies have already made cute/pretty works of art. But we could use more, especially since we will use the decorated bras as table centerpieces at our January Fashion show. Remember, it has to be a 36C, padded bra decorated on the outside, inside and straps. This is a chance to get really creative! I'm also still collecting paper towel rolls. Again, this is to heighten awareness about breast cancer, but is also lots of fun. If you need some ideas or help, or want some clarification, contact Julia George at 868-7393. Something new at the December meeting...once again we will have a couple of fundraisers for the FFWC State President's Project, Heifer International. All the money we raise will go towards providing families both an animal, and the necessary knowledge, to help them improve their standard of living. One of the activities we will do is known as a reverse raffle. There will be a detailed explanation at the luncheon, but let’s just say, this is one raffle you might NOT want to win. We are looking forward to a tasty meal and some good laughs, so make sure to bring a friend. Advanced confirmations would be appreciated.

Cocoa Beach Parade

2009 COCOA BEACH CHRISTMAS PARADE, Saturday, December 12th, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Terry Ducharme Chairperson

Check-in is at 3rd street North for the floats and vehicles and they then proceed to the PO parking lot to take our place in the parade line-up. The parade goes south on N. Orlando and then back up Brevard Ave.

I have volunteered to drive my convertible with HOBY scholarship recipients as passengers.

Anyone interested in walking in the parade representing the Cocoa Beach Woman's Club by my vehicle is most welcomed. Those who walk along side the CBWC car, will hand out candy to the children.

CELEBRATING WOMEN

JULIA LATHROP (1858-1932)
GFWC’s Chicago Woman’s Club supported the juvenile court law, the first ever to be passed in the United States. This law became the model for all subsequent juvenile court laws, many of which were passed at the insistence of GFWC clubwomen. Chicago clubwoman, Julia Lathrop led this club effort and was appointed by President William Howard Taft to head the Children’s Bureau in 1912.

EMMA LAZARUS (1849-1887)
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. These famous words from The New Colossus, were written by Emma Lazarus, one of the first successful Jewish authors. Originally created in 1883, the sonnet was later engraved in bronze and placed at the base of the Statue of Liberty.

Home Life Department is collecting small personal size toiletries

The Home Life Department is collecting small personal size toiletries for Christmas Gift Bags to be given to the women in the Salvation Army Shelter. This shelter for women and children holds 40 people and the average stay is 3 months. While there the women are helped in finding jobs and saving money, they attend classes in leadership and self-esteem, and a clothes closet is available to them when they go job hunting.

A few suggestions for the Gift Bags are small size deodorants, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soaps, shampoo, combs, perfume, small individual packages of Kleenex, make-up that has not been used, and jewelry that you no longer wear.

These women have experienced emotional and/or physical abuse. We would like them to know that the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club is wishing them well as they work towards a better life. Please help us fill these Gift Bags. Bring your donations to the December 3rd meeting where we will have a special table for them.

CLOTHING COLLECTION for Central Brevard Sharing Center

The Public Affairs Department is having a CLOTHING COLLECTION for Central Brevard Sharing Center.

Please look through your closets and select clothing items that are clean and in good condition and bring them to the December 3rd meeting.

There will be a table for clothes.

The clothes are for the Center’s Dress for Success program. This program is to empower women by promoting the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire as they seek employment.

DECEMBER IS INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS MONTH

The focus for our December Holiday Luncheon will be Heifer International. Linda Dennis, GFWC Florida president, has chosen Heifer International as her President’s Project. Her theme is Sharing Hope for a Better Tomorrow and the symbol is The Ark Filled with Farm Animals. Her goal is to annually raise funds to provide at least 14 “arks” of animals, one representing each of our 14 districts.
Across the United States and around the world, Heifer International is working with communities to end poverty and hunger. Through the gift of animals, plants and training this organization aids recipients in becoming self-reliant while providing a better standard of living, a feeling of dignity and hope.
Heifer’s gifts of animals offer marketable products of milk, eggs, meat, wool, and other benefits that can be used to provide nutrition, health, and income for resource-poor families.
“Passing on the Gift“ is the heart of Heifer International‘s sustainable community development philosophy. Every family who receives an animal signs a contract to pass on one or more of their animal’s offspring to another family in need, along with the training and skills that they have acquired. This unique approach creates a ripple effect that transforms lives and communities.
There will be a table with information about Heifer International and Gift Cards where you can buy shares in an animal, these make wonderful gifs for everyone on your list, especially for the person who has everything!

December President's letter

Happy Holidays!

As you know, we are entering into our busiest time of year. I hope that we have an enjoyable and successful season for our club.

By the time you read this, Julia and Jean will have joined me in attending the report writing workshop for District 6. This workshop will be presented by our state president elect Teddy Hulse and is our most intense and informative workshop. We will learn of the changes made during the past year which affect the annual reports that we submit to state. It seems that there are always changes.

Julia and I attended an event in Viera recently for the Woman’s Center. It was to introduce the first recipient of a $2,500 Microloan. The microloan project was discussed by Pam Paquette at our October meeting. CBWC was recognized as being among the first sponsors of the program.

Jean, Julia and I attended a fundraiser last weekend at which I was able to discuss the Very Special Arts project with one of the founders. VSA is very grateful for CBWC help and asks that we please continue to volunteer our help at the zoo in the spring. The theme this year will be the ocean.

Julia has done a terrific job getting vendors for our Arts and Crafts fair. It is going to be a full house and we are talking to vendors for next year. This is a great opportunity to shop and enter into the season gently (I’m writing this almost two weeks before the fair. I realize you will be reading this after).

I recently attended a conflict resolution workshop which I really enjoyed. For the next few newsletters I will include one of the conflict management styles discussed at the workshop. Hope you find them useful and entertaining, too.

ART Competition
There is still time....to complete those projects for entry in our Arts and Crafts Competition.

Eligible work must be completed between January 1 and December 31, 2009. Our Club competition will be February 4, 2010 at our regular meeting.

You can enter the crafts division, and the arts division, if you have earned less than $1000 from the sale of your craft or art in the preceding 12 months. In the crafts division, you can enter only one item per category, but as many categories as you want.

Some of the categories include:
Ceramics, mosaics, jewelry, bead work, decoupage, memory books/scrapbooks, Florida materials, floral arranging, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, cross-stitch, fabric crafts, quilting, sewing, doll making, holiday ideas, and others.

There are a multitude of categories in the arts division too, including painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, sculpture, and photography.

YEARBOOK: The CBWC 2009 / 2010 yearbook is ready!
Plus, this year we have very nice new light blue covers. All current members will receive the insides to update their yearbook, but if you would like one of the new covers, they are available for $7.50 each. Of course, incoming new members will get these covers with the yearbook info inside as part of their induction. If interested in purchasing a new cover, please contact any of the Board members to place your order.

The Artful Bra Project.
The State has adopted a fun project to keep breast cancer awareness in the forefront, and we are excited to participate. Each member has the opportunity to decorate a 36C, padded bra on the outside, inside and straps. This is a chance to get really creative! We will use the decorated Bras our members make as table centerpieces at our January Fashion show. Then we will take them to the State Spring Convention in April and enter them in the FFWC State competition and show. At that time, all the bras will be sewn onto padded hangers, which the State will supply, to prepare them for going "on tour". Needless to say, they hope you will allow them to keep the bras. Volunteer Hours tracking:
It's that time of year again--the annual State reports about our service activities. Did you know that each member needs to report their volunteer activities from January 1, 2009 thru December 31, 2009?

Look through your '08-'09 yearbook to remind you of what you've done to help during 2009. Examples: if you baked/brought refreshments for one of our monthly meetings, count the hours you spent baking and the estimated money value of what you brought; count the number of hours you attended planning meetings around events or department specific meetings, including related phone calls; count the financial contributions you made to any project/activity including personal checks, admission tickets, raffle tickets, etc.; count the estimated value of any items you donated.
When you write these items up, make sure to put the date, related event or department, hours contributed, and money contributed.

Don't forget to put your name on the page and give this info to Jean Carey or Pam Kendrick by the January 7th meeting in order for it to be included in our Club reports.

You'll be surprised at how quickly our volunteer hours add up!

VETERAN’S DAY IS NOVEMBER 11th and
AUTHOR’S DAY IS NOVEMBER 1st

We will honor Veteran’s Day with a focus on Prisoners of War / Missing in Action (POW/MIA)

Our speaker will be Carol Jose. Carol will tell us about her most recent book, “You Are Not Forgotten: A Family’s Quest for Truth and the Founding of the National League of Families”.

This is a non-fiction, well-documented Vietnam War history that she co-authored with the late Evelyn Grubb of Melbourne. Former Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, wrote the Foreword.

Evelyn Grubb’s husband was shot down over North Vietnam in 1966. The book won first prize for history /non-fiction from the Indie Book Awards. This is a powerful, personal, and emotional journey of a group of strong and capable women and men who came together, grew in stature and effectiveness, and ensured that their husbands and loved ones would not be forgotten. Carol was recently invited to the Pentagon by the Secretary of Defense for the ceremonies held on National POW/MIA Recognition Day, where Secretary Gates and former POW Admiral Jeremiah Denton were the featured speakers.

If possible, Carol’s friend Evelyn Guarino will come to answer questions. Her husband was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for nearly 8 years. She has written a book “Saved By Love”.

This will be a Book-signing Event. Books make great gifts.

Jean Carey

Although she was born in the northeast, Jean lived most of her life in Virginia until moving to Florida 9 years ago.
Jean and her late husband, Charlie, had 3 children, 2 sons and one daughter. Jean has 6 grandchildren and 2 grand dogs! Daughter Cathy is an artist in California. She teaches color theory for the Art Institute of California in San Diego. Cathy also presents workshops in Santa Fe during the summer.
While living in Virginia, Jean worked as a White House volunteer in communications. She began in the Carter administration and worked during the Reagan years. Jean addressed cards going to elderly birthday recipients and after the Reagan assassination attempt, she pre-read mail before forwarding it.
Jean has belonged to the CBWC almost 4 years. In addition to all the hard work she does for us, she also belongs to the Brevard Art Museum, the Women's Center, Newcomers, the retired officer's wives club and MOAA (military officer's association of America).
A very busy lady!

The time is passing so quickly. We will be electing a nominating committee at our next general meeting on November 5th. Please let me know if you are interested in serving on the committee. Committee members should have been a CBWC member for at least one year and know most of our members.

We have had some health problems among our members lately. I want to send our hopes and prayers for better days to Ginny Pruitt, Pauline Contakos, Anne Herrington, Barb Holden, Jean Carey & Lucy Tolsen. It is approaching our busiest time of year and we have high hopes for success!

By the time you receive your newsletter, our gold party will have been held. Many people have been working to make it a big event and I especially want to thank Julia George for all of her hard work and our jewelry "genius" Don Traver, http://www.theprivatejeweler.com/intro.asp for his many efforts on our behalf.

Also, thank you to Cocoa Beach High School's Maureen Baldino and the musical groups who provided the entertainment for us. Extra thanks go to everyone who brought food and helped with tickets and decorations. Our yearbooks have been printed and will be available at the November meeting.

Thank yous go to Irene Harris, Claudia Davis, Julia George and Barb Holden helping to put our new book together. Extra thanks to Irene who is no longer able to attend our meetings and to Julia who found some great looking new yearbook covers for us on the internet. You will see the new covers at our next general meeting.

Our Vendor Fair last year was a terrific lead into the holiday season and I know this year will be really fun, too. Julia and her art group ladies have been hard at work for some time. I can't wait to see what gift ideas we will have to choose from!

Save January 23rd for a special treat! We have fashions from Sarasota provided by a vendor from the state convention. She is very popular at the Convention and we are really lucky to get her. We also have the former Head Chef from the Rockledge Country Club catering our lunch. He is suggesting some really outstanding buffet items.

For decorations we will have "Artful Bras". The idea is to support "Breast Cancer Awareness" and is a state project and contest.

By the time you read this, five of us will have attended the Annual District 6 meeting and will have heard what other clubs are doing as fundraisers this year. It should be informative and may give us ideas for next year. Members attending are Sheryle Schaefer, Jean Carey, Barb Holden, Julia George and Pam Kendrick.

FFWC State Boards were the weekend of 9/18 - 9/20 in Orlando. For any of you who haven't been, it's the event at which we can attend many workshops specific to our different departments, share ideas with Florida Woman's Club members from around the State, and even enjoy a few laughs. I went over for just the day Saturday and came back with lots of ideas for fundraisers, some things to consider regarding our club and sales tax (not such a simple topic!), some new perspectives on how our club operates compared to some others in our area, and some fun memories as a result of a fund-raising event at dinner--a "horse" race in the style of the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately, our District 6 "pony" fell behind and finished in the middle of the pack. But she sure looked pretty!

I hope more of us will be in attendance at the Spring Convention--and I hope you're getting your artwork and your craft projects, as well as your short stories and poems, ready to send there too!

This year the six departments will concentrate on helping women and children.

In October and November we will offer service to women in our immediate community through the collection of food and clothing. In December and January we will offer service to women in the wider community through “Women of Hope”, a program that works to empower women in Afghanistan and through “Heifer International”, a program that works to empower women internationally.

Pat Paquette from the Women’s Center will be our speaker. The Mission of the Women’s Center is to empower women and their families by providing support, education, counseling, information and services. She will talk about the effects of violence in families. Pat will explain the new Women’s Center Microloan Program. Microloans are small loans to women for start-up and/or newly established small businesses.

HOME LIFE DEPARTMENT
OCTOBER IS CANCER AWARENESS MONTH.

We will have several brochures on Cancer Awareness that were gathered at Fall Board. Please pick up the information on The Artful Bra Project.

This project is intended to make the public aware of breast cancer, to memorialize those lost to the disease and to honor survivors. The project was kicked off at Fall Board with a flyer and a display table with samples of Artful Bras. Pick up the information and enter the contest!
We also have information on Swine Flu and Strokes. Brochures on “What Everyone Needs to Know about Money and Retirement” will be available.

CELEBRATING WOMEN

JULIA WARD HOWE (1819-1910)
Julia Ward Howe served as President of the Massachusetts Federation Women’s Club. Author of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, she was the founder of the American Woman’s Suffrage Association and also a famous poet and lecturer.

SUSAN KELLY-DREISS (1942- )
For over 30 years, Susan Kelly-Dreiss has worked to enact legal protections, implement innovative services and heighten public awareness on behalf of battered women and their children.

In 1976, Ms. Kelly-Dreiss lobbied for passage of Pennsylvania’s first domestic violence law, and later that same year, she co-founded the nation’s first domestic violence coalition - the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV). She was a founding member of the National Network to End Domestic Violence and has played a key role in drafting federal legislation including the Federal Violence Prevention and Services Act and the Violence Against Women Act.

Susan Kelly-Dreiss was inducted into the National Woman’s Hall of Fame in 2009.

Marjorie Cmejla

Marjorie joined CBWC in 1988. Marjorie and husband Howard moved to Cocoa Beach from Westchester County, NY in 1987. Howard has a PH.D in entomology and zoology and worked 25 years for a pharmaceutical company in New York. Margie and Howard have six children and celebrated their 61st anniversary on 9/11!

Marjorie started a choral group in CBWC called the Treble Tones. They performed for the Club, various nursing homes and other Christmas events. Margie has held several CBWC club positions including both first and third vice president.

Marjorie is a talented lady! She has performed in musicals at Surfside as both a singer and a dancer. Margie loves sewing and baking and has contributed to many of our meetings and projects. She also says she loves being in Florida.

President’s Message

A very busy time, September and October!

Jean Carey, Julia George and I will be attending Fall Boards in Orlando on the 18th through the 20th of September. This is always a busy time and full of workshops to give the latest information from state. Emphasis this time seems to be on doing everything “online” including report submission and dues information from our Treasurer, Marilyn.

As I announced at our September general meeting, the District 6 annual meeting will be on October 13th in Eau Gallie. This is an excellent opportunity to meet our colleagues from the other 13 district clubs. If she is able, our state president, Linda Dennis, will be joining us for the meeting as well. It is a time for sharing ideas for fundraisers and learning from other clubs. If anyone would like to attend this informative meeting, please let me know ASAP as I must send in the registration by October 2nd.

Julia and I have been doing a lot of planning ahead — up to 2011! We are exploring the possibility of a joint fundraiser with some other Cocoa Beach Groups. I’m very enthused about this as it is something I think has great potential for funds and fun!

Please remember to set aside October 24th. Save your gold, silverware, coins, etc. for our party.

We are taking a few reservations for $25 raffle tickets for the diamond necklace.
Most tickets will be sold at the door a total of 108 tickets sold altogether. I will be asking for some help with selling tickets, etc. at the party.

I hope that you all are enjoying your summer break and are just about ready to return to a busy year.

Each time that I see our scholarship recipients in the spring, it renews my determination to do the very best job possible to make the coming year a big success. Once again, I will be asking most of you for help, so please say yes!

There are two important meetings within the coming month. A District 6 President’s Council will be held in Viera on August 21st. Also, the FFWC Fall Board Meeting will be in Orlando at the Rosen Plaza on September 18-20th.

September is Literacy Month and our general meeting on the 10th will focus on Education. The Principal and Assistant Principal from Cape View Elementary in Canaveral will join us to receive two gifts. We will be presenting a check to start an Emergency Fund. It will be used to aid really needy children as determined by a teacher or administrator. Also, they will be receiving 30 dictionaries from us. Jan Mulberry will make the presentation on behalf of our Education Department. We also have a speaker and a Brunch planned for this meeting. Please plan to come over to our kick-off meeting of the year!

Once again, we are so grateful to Don E. Traver for helping us in our efforts to raise scholarship money. He has really gone all out to help this year. We are having a Gold buying party, but it will be unlike any other. Don donated a $2,700.00 diamond necklace for us to raffle off at our party on October 24th! There will be food, entertainment and free gifts. Each person attending will receive a free gemstone from Don. Additional gemstones will be available at a small price. Don is providing security. So please save your jewelry, coins, silverware, etc. and come to the party.

Plans are well underway for our Second Annual Art / Craft fair in November. It was so nice last year and we hope to expand this year.

We have a special treat in store for December when our state President, Linda Dennis, will join us.

When I started planning this year’s programs I realized that last year’s speakers were all men, so I decided that this year would be the year to “Celebrate Women”, and we will do this in several ways. We will hear the stories of courage, strength and accomplishment of women in our community. Each month I will highlight the accomplishments of notable GFWC clubwomen and a few lines about some other exceptional woman in history.

While researching this I was fascinated by the lives of so many women and the difference they have made in our world. These women are dynamic, intelligent, and accomplished women. They had to overcome sexism, stereotypical expectations of women, and personal obstacles, each has become a stellar example of greatness in her respective field. We will celebrate these women!

September is "Literacy Month"

Cocoa Beach Woman's Club EDUCATION DEPARTMENT is presenting the September Program “LITERACY MONTH”. The focus will be on "Education in the Community".

Cindy Heinig from the Cocoa Beach Library will be our speaker at our September 10th General meeting at the Cocoa Beach Country Club. Ms. Heinig will talk about the importance of reading at all ages.

The Cocoa Beach Woman's Club has become a sponsor of the Dictionary Project. Sponsors provide a personal dictionary to school children so they can enjoy the benefit of a large vocabulary. Reading is the most important skill of all and educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn.

Jan Mulberry, Chairman of the Education Department, will present 30 dictionaries to representatives from Cape View Elementary School at the meeting. These will be given to third grade students. Our club will be listed on the Dictionary Project’s web-site as a sponsor working to improve literacy and the quality of life in our community.

To encourage reading at all ages we will have a “book-swap”. Please bring in a book you no longer want and exchange it for another one.

The Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club (CBWC), a non-profit service organization, held a special ceremony June 4, 2009 at the Cocoa Beach Country Club to recognize some of the recipients of almost $6,000.00 of scholarships and awards given to students from Cocoa Beach during the 2008-2009 academic year.

The CBWC holds various events throughout the year to raise money for scholarships in academic achievement and for women returning to the workforce. There was also an award for outstanding athletic achievement, as well as twelve $50.00 savings bond winners from four different Cocoa Beach elementary schools. This year, there was also a special $1,000.00 Anne K Brush Memorial Scholarship for the Performing Arts awarded. The CBWC also awarded two grants for attendees to the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership training. Membership in the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club is open to women from the area who are interested in service to the community. New Member of the Month: Julia George

Cocoa Beach Woman's Club
Julia and her husband Ray recently located permanently in the area after travelling back and forth from Wyoming since 1990.
Julia has a master’s degree in counseling psychology and her husband’s degree is in sociology. Together they opened up a residential treatment facility for at-risk youth in Wyoming.
Julia was born in Texas and has a strong interest in Arts and Crafts. She recently completed a course in fused glass. She was the winner of an honorable mention award at state convention for her watercolor portrait of one of her cats. She and her husband have 4 children, 3 cats and 2 chinchillas. Julia is interested in getting some art and craft workshops started for our members, so please turn in one of her survey cards. She also tells me that she is happy to belong to CBWC since we are a service organization.

Thanks to all who attended and helped to make our Installation Luncheon such a success. We were so fortunate to have state President-elect Teddy Hulse available to do our installations. Special thanks go to Barbara Holden for the lovely program booklets. And thank you to everyone for my beautiful necklace. It was a total surprise! You are all very good at keeping a secret.

Marilyn, Jean, Bobbie and I have been working on next year’s budget. We have made a few changes and feel that we have some new and different plans that we can all enjoy.

It’s that time of the year and the scholarship applications have arrived. The high school winners have already received their awards. A very big ”Thank You” goes to Marilyn Grigsby for all she does as Scholarship Chairwoman. We had two sets of applications: one for high school seniors and one for the BCC women returning to the work force scholarship. Evaluating the applications were Lucy Tolson, Lynne Lamy, I.B. Johannson, and myself. Seeing the applications and the need always makes me wish that we had more money to give.
Please try to attend our next general meeting on June 4th. We have invited many special guests.

They include:
The two $1,000 Scholarship high school recipients.
The $1,000 Performing Arts scholarship recipient
The representatives of Cocoa Beach High School Band, Orchestra and Chorus who will each receive $75.00 awards for their respective programs.
The two CBHS winners of H.O.B.Y. awards
The winner of the BCC scholarship
The Athletic Award winner
The counselors from Cocoa Beach High School.
We can be proud of each of our recipients and also ourselves for being able to give these awards. As we always do, we will be giving a total of 12 savings bonds to 4 area schools, Roosevelt Elementary, Cape view, Freedom 7 and Our Savior.
At the June 4th meeting, we will be welcoming 3 new members. Being installed will be Pat Dugan, Rozan Jordan, and Betty Rokes.
Many thanks to Terry and Janice for their hard work on the Gala again this year. The decorations were really pretty and thank you to Julia George for your help with them.
As many of you are enjoying your “Northern Break” this summer, Jean Carey and I will be putting together our 2009-2010 schedule. Jean does such an outstanding job planning our programs and we can look forward to another great year.
Barbara Holden and I will be attending a Spring Workshop in Grand Haven on May 29th. The focus will be on Membership and we can all certainly benefit from that.
Have a wonderful summer and we will “see you in September”.

Member of the Month Barbara Freeman

Member of the Month - Barbara Freeman

Barbara has lived in Cocoa Beach since 1956. She joined CBWC in 1987-1988 and was the Cocoa Beach Woman’s Club president from 2000 – 2002. Barbara also served in other offices including newsletter editor and 1^st Vice President.

Barbara has her own business as a consulting accountant. She previously worked at the Cape as an auditor at Johnson Controls, having been assigned to the position by the Department of Defense.

Barbara has been a life-long participant in the Arts. She studied ballet and tap for 14 years. She has performed in the Florida Follies and is an active supporter of BSO. Barbara is a member of the Strawbridge Art League and also a blue ribbon winner in the CBWC Art/Craft contest and in the District 6 contest.

Barbara has three step-children and currently shares her home with her male cat and her mother.
